Home owners can be challenged by winter weather. If you get your water from a private well, it's a good idea to check a few things before the really cold weather and snow set in. Winter can exacerbate potential well concerns. You save yourself time and money by preparing ahead.
Winter maintenance is important because frozen ground and layers of snow can cause delays if your well has any issues. Like most things, preventative maintenance is the best course of action.
Visually inspect all well equipment, particularly the well cap or and well casing to ensure the cap securely fits. Ensure the land around the wellhead slopes away from the well (and confirm the area is free of debris). Keep all contaminants, such as motor oil, fertilizer or pesticides away from the well.
Test the water immediately if there are any changes in odor, taste or appearance.
