Your well cap is your first defense against any type of contamination getting in to your well. It's important that it be maintained properly to protect your water source from insects, liquid contaminants, etc. Putting in this effort can make a big difference in your home's water quality.
Current regulations require that your well cap be out of the ground 12" or more. It's also best to have the ground around the well cap slope away from the cap so any possible pesticides and herbicides will not converge around your well head. Most caps include a vented screen to allow air flow for the pumping of the water to work.
Insects can cause major issues for your well and they tend to like the damp, dark environment. They can cause contamination from their droppings.
By properly maintaining your well head and well cap, you increase your chances of having safe and clean water.
